Female teams need coaches!
So where do I start?
The majority of teams in the Girls structure rely on volunteer coaches, in many cases these are parents of individual players who wish to ensure the team is able to compete in matches and does not fold.
You do not need any existing qualifications or to have played the game in order to be a Good Coach
Becoming A Coach
-
Grassroots football clubs form the foundation for a successful Women’s game in Wales. Many clubs have existing girl’s teams, who are happy to take coaches through their first steps in football and beyond.
-
No! Many of the best coaches, including those whose teams have been successful in the current season have never played football at youth or senior level. Your club will provide you with support in terms of guidance and potential drills to run, many resources are available online to supplement these. Most importantly it's about making football an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all.
-
Where coaching children or vulnerable adults, this is a necessity in Wales. No club should allow you to enter a coaching environment until this has been completed.
-
No, but it is expected that if you wish to coach you will complete the following as early as possible in your coaching journey, this should be around 12 hours learning, at least 50% of which can be completed at your own pace.
Football Leaders Award - An online course focusing on areas such as setting up a practice, effective communication with players and progression. The course is set out in module which you can complete at your own pace, and takes around 6 hours in total. There are no exams, and no coursework required.
First Aid Award - A face-to-face course demonstrating basic lifesaving skills and first aid techniques for application in a footballing environment. The course takes 3 hours in total. There are no exams, and no coursework required.
Safeguarding Award - An online workshop to support good practice and highlight poor practice when working with children and vulnerable adults. The course takes 3 hours in total. There are no exams, and no coursework required.
The most important thing you must have is a desire to make football enjoyable for those you are coaching, the qualifications allow you to build on this to ensure all are safe when doing so.
-
The FAW have set the minimum age to complete their courses at 16, so a coaching role below this age looks unlikely. However, other roles may be available, if you speak to your local club they are likely to encourage you to assist in any way they can.
